Director

Job description:

The director is the person who bring the whole vision to life and decides how and what the vision looks like, they are the driving force the of the project, but they must also be weary of the budget constraints that hold them, they may assume multiple roles such as the director/writer or director/producer, but being a director requires great vision and having great dedication and commitment.

 

Responsibilities:

The director may write the script or they may hire a writer to write the script for them, or they may even be hired when an early version of the script has been written, they must develop a vision of the finished film and make a practical way of making it happen, during the pre-production process they make the crucial decisions like selecting the right cast locations of the film, they have then got to direct the performances of the actors once the film is in production.

During post-production, the directors work closely with editors through different process of editing, at all stages of production the director is responsible for the motivation of the team so that they produce the best possible results, they must also appreciate the need and expectations of the films financers.

 

Skills:

They must an exceptional vision and a creative flair to create an engaging and original film, a commitment to see it through and a passion for making a great film, they must also be a strong and confident leader, they must constantly make decisions but also be able to work with other directors if necessary. They must great communication and interpersonal skills. They must also inspire the team to produce the film envisioned and also have the capacity for long hours of intensive work and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

 

Education:

For a director there are no formal qualifications but studying the art and craft of directing is important, the role can only be mastered through in-depth practical experience. Studying the role in media as you can get hands on experience from the course as well as learn new techniques.

 

Experience:

Working your way up the ladder stating from a runner can give you great experience as you will get to watch other directors and how they work on location for the film, writing a screen play or directing a short film or an amateur play is a great way of learning what to do and what not to do on set.

 

Personal attributes:

They have to have a creative vision, dedication and commitment to carry a vision of the film, but they also have to have patience. They must act as both story teller and team leader, they also must have an exceptional artistic vision and creative skills. They must be able to delegate or collaborate with other directors if necessary.
