Eight short film review

Plot:

Eight follows a day in the life of a young football fan who hs to come to terms with living in a new town and facing the loss of his father, he tries to guess what his father did in his life and we find out that his mother still tries to avoid directly talking about his father.

Opinion:

I found this short film quite interesting as dealt with a child trying to find out who his father was and I actually felt sad for him and it was very heart warming to see this, made me think about what if I was in the same situation as the main character.

The Short and Curlies short film review

plot:

The short and curlies, is short film by Mark Leigh. this is a romantic comedy that revolves around two characters Joy and Clive, it shows how they interact with each other and other people, Clive interacts with people by telling really bad jokes and Joy acts like there is no joy in her life.

opinion:

i found the plot and characters really dull, they did not seem developed at all we didn’t have any backstory to them or any useful information, the plot was at times very boring and not at all entertaining. I will say though that acting was good for a short movie made in 1988

Scott Pilgram Vs the World

Plot:

The Story of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, revolves around the life of Scott Pilgrim an unemployed 23 yr old who plays in a band and is dating a 17 yr old schoolgirl named “Knives chau”. While at a party he meets Ramona Flowers who he falls in love with, he has trouble breaking up with Knives while he tries to date Ramona, he finds out that Ramona comes with baggage 7 evil Ex’s in fact and to date Ramona he must defeat all of the 7 Ex’s.

opinion:

even though Scott Pilgrim was originally a graphic novel the director Edgar Wright has done a great job adapting it for the big screen and the audience, he kept to the core storyline in time with comic and the cast did an amazing job portraying the characters I found the whole experience of the film a joy to watch.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Text adventure

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is a text-based adventure game based on the popular novel “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams. Released in 1984, published by the company Infocom (the makers of Zork games) and had become a huge success and won multiple game of the year awards and sold over 350,000 copies. It was released on the Commodore 64, DOS and the Atari ST. the game was written by Douglas Adams and programmed by Steve Meretzky.

The game was notoriously known for being difficult and not giving out instructions to the players to help them and making them kill their character and start from the beginning. The original game interface was just a simple black background, with text waiting for input from the player as the game did not give out any help to the player. In one level of the game there was an item you had to collect called the “babel fish” which required the use of several in-game items, in which the player had use them in a certain order to collect it and many players had to restart to get them in the correct order.

The game has been updated over the thirty years of it release by the BBC who have added HD art, music and built social features.

The visual style of the game is very 2D does not really show us any detail on the background we have to rely more on our imagination than visuals. The game is annoyingly difficult at times as there are hardly any hints for the player and this is what i think made this game very addicting for players knowing that they have accomplished something difficult without the aid of visual clues.

I think what made this game unique is because it is a text adventure that gives a lot to the players but also very little at the same time which back in 1984 was common practice for video games to do that, but in 2014 it doesn’t happen at all games give us all the facts and hold our hands  through the game, I think this is what makes this game unique.

different types of writing

Genre theory assignment task 3:

The differences between writing a script, a review and a blog entry:

Script:

The differences between writing a script, a review and blog entry is that they three completely different things, writing a script is writing from the point of view of a character or telling the story of that character, the presentation of a script is formatted differently from both a review and a blog, a script is written for the screen not the internet or magazines. Example: one of the last scripts I wrote was for my genre scene, creating the characters and a story for me was quite easy, but my main weaknesses for this was that writing down the characters, introducing them and introducing the story, is what I found difficult with writing scripts.

Review

Writing a review is being critical or giving the critics opinion and the title of the review usually tells the reader how and what he thought the film, the reviewer usually includes some of the most important information for the readers, these are usually written before the film’s or products release, example: the last review I wrote was for the Sherlock, I found thinking of what to write to be easy, but actually putting them into words to actually quite difficult.

Web-blog

Web blogs- these usually written with one specific topic in mind but can also focus on lots of different subjects, these are usually written for the public and focuses on not just one group of people, usually web blog to either stir up debate within groups of people or to provide a way to interact with each other. But the layout of a web-blog is different from a review and a script, it is written for the internet and is laid out completely different, example: the last blog post I wrote was for broadcast and non-broadcast my strengths and weaknesses with this, was that trying to get down enough information, not too much but alos not too little at the same time was my biggest weakness.

character roles

  1. Which would you be in your:
  • Group of friends
  • I would be the either the patriarch or matriarch role as sometimes I am both carer and provider
  • Family
  • In my family I would the craftsman as I am the only who know how thing work

  1. Does it differ? Why? It does differ as at home I am the who makes stuff work, but within my friendship groups I am more caring towards my friends

sci-fi genre question

What are the differences between the two main types of sci-fi film?

the two different main types of sci-fi include: Earth bound sci-fi e.g. Blade runner and Transcendence, and futuristic sci-fi: e.g. Star trek and 2001: A space odyssey

the differences between the two main types of sci-fi are that they feature different settings, different types of characters, they feature two completely different types of storylines and they pace themselves very differently from each other.

an example of this would be that Blade Runner has a much slower plot than say Star Trek as the story of Blade Runner wants us to gather up all the facts before we have a conclusion to the story, but in Star Trek we are given most of the character back story and information within first half of the movie and the rest just feels like filler till the end.

The “What if?” in Blade Runner is What if we create to robots that can think and feel like humans? Where as the “What if?” in Star Trek is What if we journey out into space and we found alien’s that could either be our allies or our enemies and the whole galaxy of people

Fable 2 game reivew

fable 2 is the sequel to the highly successful Fantasy/Adventure game fable for the original Xbox, in which it is set almost 100 years after the fist game.

plot:

The main story of Fable 2 sees you take control of the character the Hero of Bowerstone and from there you meet your sister Rose and the mysterious Lord Lucian who invites you and your sister up into his castle. Where you discover that you are a hero threatened by this, Lucian kills your sister but nearly kill the Hero where s/he is found by Theresa a “seer” from there she heals your wounds and watches you grow up, when you come of age she let’s your character go out in to the world to either get revenge on Lucian or save the world.

my opinion of Fable 2 is that it is a fun game that has given me a lot of hours of gameplay and a definition of what is good and evil in video games but the morality in the game is very black and white it tells whether you’re doing a good deed or bad deed, the game should let the player find out what has happened within the game at a later date overall this game did not live up to its predcessor in some ways, but exceeds it in some other ways including the combat system, the voice acting and the overall story.

Documentary question

I don’t think it is possible to document reality as most people or animals if put in front of a camera will always act differently from  how they normally act as they know that they are being watched by a crew of people.

3 conventions of factual media:

  • archived footage-exisiting footage that has been borrowed
  • interviews (with witnesses)
  • voice over

archived can be used to recreate reality, the archived footage can give as sense of the past showing us what it was like.

Interviews with witnesses can tell us a side of the story that may be no one else knew at the time and they can tell vital information regarding a certain event that they have seen.

Voice overs they can explain what is happening within the show and adds a sense of familiarity for people.
